Facilitating the cultural adaptation process for students and academic staff arriving in Poland by helping them understand Polish culture, customs, social norms, and practical aspects of everyday life.

AGENDA

1. Introduction and Integration

2. Polish Culture and National Identity

To introduce the most important elements of Polish culture and history that shape daily life:

  • A brief overview of Polish history and how it influences Polish mentality.

  • Key values in Polish society (e.g., family, religion, hospitality, work ethic).

  • Polish humor, biases, and stereotypes – how to understand and interpret them.

3. Intercultural Communication: How to Navigate?

To build intercultural competencies, address communication differences, and help participants understand and overcome the more challenging stages of adaptation:

  • Polish communication style: formality, directness vs. subtlety.

  • Common linguistic pitfalls and faux pas.

  • What is cultural shock? Stages of adaptation (honeymoon, frustration, acceptance).

  • Techniques for coping with challenges (building support networks, embracing differences, practicing the language).

4. Polish Savoir-Vivre

To understand etiquette rules in Poland across different situations:

  • How to greet, introduce oneself, and use polite forms of address ("pan/pani").

  • Behavioral norms when visiting someone, during academic meetings, and in public.

5. Summary and Q&A

Methods:

  • Mini-lectures with anecdotes.

  • Exercises [breakout rooms].
